About the National Deaf Christian Workshop
Who We Are and What We Believe

“The church which Christ built is neither denominational nor Protestant.  It possesses no denominating creed, name or hierarchy.  It was not founded in protest to any existing institution.  It is not the product of the ‘Reformation’ or the ‘Restoration.’  But it is, and must be, the full-grown plant which has arisen from the ‘seed of the kingdom’ sown in the hearts of men (Luke 8:11).  Its origin is to be found in the gospel of Christ (Acts 2:38, 47; Matthew 28:18-20).  It is founded on the apostles and prophets with Christ as the chief corner stone (Ephesians 2:20).  To date its appearance in history earlier or later than the atonement of Christ is futile, for it is His body (Ephesians 1:22, 23) and He purchased it with His own blood (Acts 20:28; Matthew 26:28).  By its very nature, the body is exclusive:  it is one (Ephesians 4:4).  There could not conceivably be more than one body as there is but one head (Colossians 1:18).           In the presence of a divided Christendom one runs the risk of being misunderstood by suggesting that there is but one church.  It is not here suggested that there is but one ‘denomination.’  The church of Jesus Christ is neither Jewish, Catholic nor Protestant.  It is non-denominational in its origin, worship and organization.  It is the body of Christ, functioning according to New Testament directions, organized according to New Testament instructions, extensive enough to embrace in its fellowship all who comply with God’s requirements and who thus become a part of that body (Acts 2:47; 1 Corinthians 12:13).  Moving on through time to its ultimate victory this ‘stone cut out of the mountain without hands’ survives the rise and fall of temporal kingdoms and proves itself to be that which in reality is– the Eternal Kingdom”  (F.W. Mattox, The Eternal Kingdom, pp. 350-1).

The Christians we read about in the New Testament worshiped and lived as they were instructed by Scripture and after those approved examples from Scripture.  They accepted that all the Bible is inspired (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21; John 16:13; 1 Corinthians 2:9-14) and held that the New Testament is the only authority for His church (Hebrews 1:1-2; 9:15-17; 1 Peter 4:11; Galatians 1:6-9).  They accepted no human creeds or other uninspired works as authoritative.  They understood that the church’s headquarters are in heaven, not on earth, and that God’s desire was for each congregation of His church to be autonomous with its own organization taken from the New Testament model (Acts 14:23; Hebrews 13:7, 17; 1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9; 1 Peter 5:1-4).  They knew that salvation comes by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:1-10; Romans 5:1) and that redemption from past sins is obtained when one is baptized by water immersion into Christ (Acts 2:38; 22:16; Galatians 3:26-27; Romans 6:3-4; Mark 16:16).

Like it's host church, The Dahlia Street Church of Christ, the 58th National Deaf Christian Workshop seeks to follow the same divinely inspired pattern that the Christians of the New Testament did.  We believe we cannot accurately be called Christians as they called themselves unless we live and worship according to the same standard as they did.  Our desire is simple, uncluttered New Testament Christianity– to get “back to the Bible.”

If you haven’t experienced the joy of a personal relationship with God or the confidence obtained from a life lived according to His Word, we invite you to let us help you learn about His will for your life and the comfort of His love.
